Rooted in Motion - Code of Conduct

Our Commitment

Rooted in Motion exists to create spaces where people can reconnect with their bodies and with each other without needing to perform, prove, or protect themselves. That kind of space requires clear agreements, shared responsibility, and willingness to be accountable when we fall short. This Code of Conduct applies to everyone in our community: participants, instructors, volunteers, organizers, and collaborators. It is grounded in intersectionality and disability justic, meaning our commitments must work for those most often excluded, not just those easiest to include. Access to movement, rest, and care is a matter of equity, autonomy, and belonging.

Who This Covers

Everyone involved in Rooted in Motion, in every context: in-person gatherings, online spaces, social media, and any event held under our name. Everyone means everyone: participants, instructors, volunteers, organizers, collaborators, donors, and guests.

Our Values

Community care. We show up for each other. That means checking in, making space, and not leaving people to manage alone.

Radical welcome. Every body is welcome here, regardless of ability, age, size, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, immigration status, income, or experience level. Welcome is something we actively practise, not just a word we use.

Accountability without shame. When harm happens, we respond with accountability, not punishment. We believe people can do better when supported to understand impact. We also believe in protecting those who have been harmed, and that accountability sometimes means someone cannot continue to participate.

Dignity in all directions. Participants, instructors, volunteers, and organizers all deserve the same respect. The people who hold and facilitate our spaces are not there to absorb poor behaviour.

Non-competitive, non-performative movement. Our practices are not about perfection. We do not compare, rank, or reward bodies. We honour rest as much as movement, and we trust each person as the authority on their own experience.

Access & Accommodation

Rooted in Motion is committed to accessible, accommodating spaces. Anyone with access needs is encouraged to contact an organizer.

Expected Conduct

We ask everyone to:

  • Treat all community members with dignity and respect.

  • Honour each person's right to define their own experience and boundaries.

  • Ask before touching and accept no as a complete answer.

  • Avoid commenting on other people's bodies, abilities, or appearance.

  • Avoid offering unsolicited advice about diet, health, or movement.

  • Not photograph or record anyone without their explicit consent.

  • Silence phones during movement practice.

Zero Tolerance

We have zero tolerance for rudeness, harassment, or abusive behaviour directed at any person in our community, including instructors, organizers, volunteers, and participants. This applies in all spaces: in-person, online, and in any communication connected to Rooted in Motion. This includes verbal abuse, discriminatory remarks, unwanted physical contact, intimidation, and any conduct that makes a person feel unsafe or unwelcome. It also includes using wellness or "compassionate" language to dismiss or minimize harm. Discrimination on any ground protected under the Ontario Human Rights Code, including disability, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, creed, and others, will not be tolerated. These behaviours are grounds for immediate removal. There are no exceptions.

Reporting & Response

If something happens that makes you feel unsafe or harmed during an event, we want to know, and we will take it seriously. You can raise a concern by speaking to an organizer or instructor directly, messaging or emailing us after the event, or asking a trusted person to communicate on your behalf. You do not need a formal complaint prepared. When a concern is raised, we commit to responding promptly and with care, listening without judgment, taking proportionate action (up to and including removal from the community), and following up with the person who raised the concern.

Legal Grounding

Legal Grounding This Code of Conduct is consistent with the Ontario Human Rights Code. Rooted in Motion is committed to going beyond compliance toward spaces that are actively anti-discriminatory.
